Totally 80's Timber Frame Home documentary | WXXI | New Energy Works Timberframers
Timber-frame construction, while unarguably unique, is limited in terms of the shapes and styles it can be assumed. Enter the hybrid house, which incorporates timber-framed rooms within a conventionally built house, opening a bold new world of possibilities in timber-home design. "The majority of my projects over the past year have been a timber-framed foyer and great room, with timber accents in the other rooms,” says Doug Tatham, a project manager with Hearthstone Inc. "By adding timber-frame elements to the conventionally built parts of the home, we can help our clients stick to their budgets while maintaining the ambiance of heavy-timber construction.”

Different Ways To Frame A Window - Home Construction And Framing
Floor framing consists of columns or posts, beams, sill plates, joists, and subfloor. Assembled on a foundation, they create a level anchored platform for the rest of the house and a strong diaphragm to keep the lateral earth pressure from pushing in the top of the foundation wall. The columns or posts and beams of wood or steel that support the joists over a basement are sometimes replaced by frame or masonry walls when the basement location is divided into rooms. Floors of the second story are generally supported on load-bearing walls in the first story. Wood-frame homes may also be constructed over a crawl space with floor framing similar to that used over a basement or on a concrete slab as you can see in the part on foundations.

House Framed in 5 Days
When a plywood subfloor is properly glued to floor joists with a structure adhesive, the subfloor and floor joists tend to act together as a one structural member. The composite T-beam thus formed can span a greater distance than a floor that is fastened only with nails. Glue-nailing of the plywood subfloor is recommended as a cost-effective method of increasing the stiffness and/or allowable space of a floor.Glue-nailing is also highly effective in reducing the floor squeaks and loose nails that may otherwise develop later as a good result of shrinkage of joists.

Home Building Mistakes - Incorrect Window Header Framing
Stairways should be designed to afford safety and adequate headrooms as well as space for the passage of furniture. So two types of stairs are the finished main stairs leading between the levels of the living areas of the house and the service stairs leading to the basement or probably even to garage area. In special cases, folding stairs are used for attic access and exterior stairs are used for enter to above ground level. Main stairs are also designed to give easy ascent and descent and can be a good feature of the interior design. Service stairs, being installed earlier, of course will be considered first. Safety and convenience are prime considerations in their design. They are usually constructed of less expensive materials and often do not have risers.

Asheville NC Timber Frame Builders - Asheville Timber Frame Homes
A general rule of thumb is that large houses cost less per-square-foot than small homes because larger structures are more efficient to build. A small home still requires the foundation to be dug, the framing crew, the plumber and electrician. So the per square foot cost may be really higher. Simple design with roofs that are straightforward are also less than houses that include a lot of wall jogs, hips, valleys, angles, etc. Two-story houses also cost less than single story design since the foundation and roof cover more than one floor of living space.

Riverbend Timber Frame Raising, Enclosing the Frame with SIPS
The participants used to span over window and door openings are called headers or lintels. As the span of the opening increases, it is necessary to increase the depth of these members to support the ceiling and roof loads. A header is traditionally made up of two 2-inch members spaced with %-inch lath or plywood strips, all of which are nailed together for convenience in handling. However, from a structural point of view, it is not necessary to nail these members together, or even to space them apart. The lath or plywood spacers are used only to bring the faces of header flush with the edges of the studs. In addition, lighter loads may not require more than a single header member.

Two Story Wood Frame Building Shake Table Test
Green is definitely a large buzzword when it comes to the house construction nowadays. But according to Tommi Jamison, marketing manager, the new push for many green products is being fueled by the consumer. "Clients are doing homework and investigating what products are available,” she says. "They want products that are earth-friendly and can help the environment, as well as cut down on maintenance for themselves.” Tommi says the green products topping her clients’ lists are bamboo flooring (which matures faster than old-growth timber), composite decking products made from recycled plastics, and synthetic stone made from concrete.

A house build from the beginning to frame stage
A variation of the gable roof, used for Cape Cod or saltbox house styles, includes the use of shed and gable dormers. The ridgeline on the Cape Cod is in the center of the roof; on the saltbox the ridgeline is off center. Both are 1½-story houses with about half as much living space upstairs as down. Second-floor space and light are provided by shed or gable dormers for bedrooms and bath. Roof slopes forthis style may vary from 9 in 12 to 12 in 12 to provide the needed upper story headroom.

There are also another issues that can make a specific type of timber better suited for a particular project aside from purely subjective factors like personal preferences. The comparative strength of the lumber can impact the design of the timber fame, in terms of the load it needs to support, and the distance of spans. Professionals can help you weigh options and choose the ideal timber for your house. No matter what type of wood you select, take the highest grade and specification in the industry, and all of our timbers are custom milled for each individual design and project.

Home Building Kits - so simple you can Do-It-Yourself
Framing, in construction known as light-frame construction, is a building technique based around vertical structural members, usually called studs, which provide a stable frame to which interior and exterior wall coverings are attached, and covered by a roof comprised of horizontal ceiling joists and sloping rafters (or pre-fabricated roof trusses).

BW Custom Log & Timber Frame Homes
Wall framing in house construction includes the vertical and horizontal members of exterior walls and interior partitions, both of bearing walls and non-bearing walls. These stick members, referred to as studs, wall plates and lintels (headers), serve as a nailing base for all covering material and support the upper floor platforms, which provide the lateral strength along a wall. The platforms may be the boxed structure of a ceiling and roof, or the ceiling and floor joists of the story above. The technique is variously referred to colloquially in the building trades as stick and frame, stick and platform, or stick and box as the sticks (studs) give the structure its vertical support, and the box shaped floor sections with joists contained within length-long post and lintels (more commonly called headers), supports the weight of whatever is above, including the next wall up and the roof above the top story. The platform also provides the lateral support against wind and holds the stick walls true and square. Any lower platform supports the weight of the platforms and walls above the level of its component headers and joists.

A Report To Home Builders - 1945 Steel Frame House Documentary
Timber frame building is one of the oldest forms of building and with today's technology is also the most cost-effective. With the UK construction industry facing increasingly high environmental standards and price pressures, it's no surprise that timber frame is rapidly gaining in popularity.
